Alviso Marina County Park, County park in Alviso, San Jose, United States
Alviso Marina County Park is a county park located at the southern end of San Francisco Bay, in the Alviso neighborhood of San Jose. It covers salt marshes and protected wetlands and has boat launches, floating docks, and picnic areas.
The area was an active shipping port in the 1800s, used to move farm goods across the bay. When the port declined, the land was eventually turned into a public park.
The park sits at the edge of what was once a busy bay port, and traces of that past are still visible in the landscape. Old pilings and flat waterways give the area a quiet, open feel that draws people who enjoy watching birds in a bay setting.
The park is open every day from sunrise to sunset and parking is free. Restrooms and picnic tables are on site, and the docks are easy to reach on foot from the parking area.
Some of the water pools near the shore have a reddish-brown color left over from old salt harvesting operations. That color comes from microorganisms that thrive in the mineral-rich remains of the old salt ponds.
