Neuer Zollhof
The Neuer Zollhof is a group of three buildings in Düsseldorf's harbor area. They have unusual curved forms and are made of different materials: brick, white plaster, and reflective stainless steel.
The buildings were designed and completed around 1998 by American architect Frank Gehry. They marked a turning point for Düsseldorf's harbor, transforming it from an old cargo area into a modern work and leisure destination.
The name comes from an old customs house that once stood on this site. Today the buildings are a place where people walk, take photos, and gather at ground-level restaurants with harbor views.
The buildings are freely accessible and you can walk around them to enjoy different viewpoints. Ground-floor restaurants offer refreshment, and the waterside location makes it a good spot for a stroll.
The buildings appear to shift their shapes depending on the viewing angle and light conditions, emphasizing the curved forms and contrasting materials. Gehry used advanced computer software to make these complex shapes possible.
