North Portland Harbor, Anabranch in Multnomah County, United States
North Portland Harbor is an anabranch of the Columbia River in Multnomah County that separates Hayden and Tomahawk Island from the Portland mainland. The waterway flows for several miles as a distinct channel before rejoining the main river.
The waterway was previously known as Oregon Slough and Hayden Slough, supporting maritime trade between Portland and the Pacific Northwest since the region's early development. Railroad construction and port development reshaped its role in regional commerce.
The Harbor Master maintains strict regulations and coordinates with multiple agencies to preserve the balance between industrial operations and recreational activities in the waterway.
Terminal 6 of the Port of Portland operates along the mainland shore to serve shipping operations. The area is crossed by both Interstate 5 and the BNSF Railway, with dedicated bridges spanning the waterway.
The waterway begins 108 miles from the Columbia River mouth and rejoins the main stem near Kelley Point Park, where it intersects with the Willamette River.
