Delta Park, Urban park in North Portland, United States
Delta Park is an urban park in north Portland, Oregon, with sports fields for softball and soccer, volleyball courts, playgrounds, and paved pathways. The eastern section holds the Owens Sports Complex, which serves both recreational players and competitive teams.
The land where the park now stands was once Vanport City, a wartime settlement that was destroyed by a Columbia River flood in 1948. Two years later, the park was established, turning the cleared ground into a public green space.
The park hosts one of the oldest Native American gatherings in the western US, drawing communities from across the Pacific Northwest. Visitors who attend can watch traditional dances and hear music passed down through generations.
The park has plenty of parking and is easy to reach by car. Sports fields tend to fill up on weekends and during warmer months, so a weekday visit is generally quieter.
A section of the park contains an arboretum where tree species suited to Portland's urban climate are grown and studied. The city uses this collection as a living reference to help decide which trees to plant in other neighborhoods.
