Winton Manor, Former hotel building in Playhouse Square district, Cleveland, US
Winton Manor is a residential building in Cleveland's Playhouse Square district that originally operated as a hotel. It has 11 floors along Prospect Avenue and displays design features from the Chicago School tradition with clean lines and functional forms.
The structure was built in 1916 by architect Nelson Max Dunning as an upscale hotel called Hotel Winton. It was renamed the Carter Hotel in 1931 and eventually closed following a major fire in the 1960s.
The building now serves as a home for seniors and reflects how downtown neighborhoods change over time. The residents shape what this place means to the community today.
The building is located in a convenient spot near Prospect Avenue with good access to public transportation. As a senior residential facility, it is not open for public tours, but you can appreciate the architecture from the street.
After the fire in the 1960s, the building was completely renovated and repurposed from a luxury hotel into modern residential housing. This dramatic transformation demonstrates how historic structures can be given entirely new lives.
