Rose Building, Historic office building in Downtown Cleveland, United States
The Rose Building on East Ninth Street is a ten-story office structure featuring wrought iron details and ornamental panels across its facade at Prospect Avenue. The building spans 400,000 square feet and is currently being transformed into a mixed-use facility with hotel rooms, apartments, and retail spaces.
Built in 1902 by Benjamin Rose, an English immigrant who accumulated wealth in meatpacking, the structure became the largest office building in Ohio at the time of its completion. Its prominence marked a turning point in the city's commercial architecture.
The tenth floor once housed the Benjamin Rose Institute, which provided pensions to elderly residents starting in 1909, enabling them to remain in their homes. This commitment reflected the social purpose the building served for its community.
The building sits in downtown Cleveland at a convenient location for walking and exploring the surrounding area on foot. Ongoing renovation work means you can observe the transformation in progress, though some sections may be restricted during construction periods.
The structure features varying floor heights by section, with the lower five stories standing taller than the upper five stories to accommodate different space needs. This design choice created distinctive interior volumes that defined how each section of the building was originally used.
