Playhouse Square, Performing arts center in downtown Cleveland, United States.
Playhouse Square is a performing arts center in downtown Cleveland, bringing together eleven venues with total seating for 10,000 people. The spaces occupy several historic theater buildings along Euclid Avenue, each offering different stage configurations and audience capacities under a shared management.
Between February 1921 and November 1922, five theaters opened in the district, establishing a new center for entertainment in Cleveland. After decades of decline, a restoration program rescued the abandoned buildings starting in the 1970s, turning them into a major arts center.
The theaters present Broadway shows, concerts, dance performances, comedy events, and educational programs, drawing over one million visitors annually.
Performances take place year-round and range from musicals to classical concerts to contemporary dance. The venues sit within walking distance in the downtown core and connect easily by public transit.
The outdoor marquee spans more than 6300 feet (1900 meters) and ranks among the largest theater lighting displays in the world. The chandelier in the State Theatre weighs over two tons and contains more than 5000 crystals.
