Church Rock, Rock formation in Navajo County, Arizona
Church Rock rises 400 feet above Church Rock Valley, reaching an elevation of 5,862 feet in the northeastern Arizona landscape.
Mexican explorer Antonio Armijo named this formation Artenesales de Piedra during his 1829 expedition to establish trade routes between Santa Fe and California.
The formation stands within Navajo Nation territory and represents one of the geological landmarks visible from Highway 160 in northeastern Arizona.
The formation receives less than 10 inches of annual rainfall, with temperatures exceeding 90°F in summer and occasionally dropping below 0°F in winter.
This pillar belongs to the Navajo Volcanic Field, formed through volcanic activity approximately 30 million years ago during the Oligocene period.
