Woodstock Mural, Large mural at New Seasons Market in Woodstock neighborhood, Portland, United States.
The Woodstock Mural is a large-scale painting on the west side of New Seasons Market in the Woodstock neighborhood. It spans approximately 52 feet wide by 15 feet tall and divides into three distinct sections, each addressing themes of commerce, education, and outdoor recreation.
The mural was created in 2015 by artist Mike Lawrence as a reproduction of an earlier artwork that had previously been displayed at the Red Fox Vintage building. This recreation demonstrates how public art can be relocated to serve new communities while preserving its original vision.
The artwork weaves together Greek gods Hermes, Athena, and Demeter with recognizable local places such as the farmers market and Woodstock Library. This blend of ancient mythology with contemporary neighborhood landmarks creates a conversation between timeless stories and the community's everyday world.
The mural is located on the west wall of the supermarket and is easily visible from the street, making it accessible to view at any time of day. Afternoon light brings out the colors most effectively, and visiting during quieter hours allows for better photography and observation.
The right panel depicts Demeter as an Asian female farmer surrounded by poppy flowers and cornucopia symbols, an unconventional representation that merges cultural diversity with classical imagery. This particular choice shows how the artwork weaves the neighborhood's contemporary identity into ancient mythological narratives.
