Tideman Johnson Natural Area, Natural area in Southeast Portland, US
Tideman Johnson Natural Area is a nature preserve spanning about 7.6 acres along Johnson Creek in Southeast Portland. The site features both paved and unpaved paths that wind through wetlands, forests, and creek corridors.
The Johnson family donated this land to Portland in 1940 after years of allowing the public to recreate on their property. This generous gift preserved the land as a green space for future generations.
The natural area teaches visitors about local plants and animals through information signs placed throughout the site. These signs help people connect with and understand the creek's ecosystem as they walk.
The main entrance is located at Southeast 37th Avenue and Tenino Street, where hiking trails connect to the Springwater Corridor Trail system. Access is straightforward and the paths link to other nearby trails for extended exploration.
A restoration project in 2006 identified multiple fish species in the creek, including Chinook salmon and steelhead trout that thrive in these waters. This thriving fishery reveals how important the creek remains for local wildlife.
