Shimanek Bridge, Covered bridge in Scio, United States.
Shimanek Bridge is a covered wooden bridge spanning Thomas Creek with a Howe truss frame, protective roof, and side panels that shield the interior from weather. The structure stretches about 130 feet across the waterway.
The bridge was built in 1966 as the fifth crossing at this location, replacing a previous structure destroyed years earlier. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
The bridge displays traditional wooden construction methods that visitors can observe directly while crossing. Walking through it, travelers experience how this building technique shaped rural infrastructure in the region.
Access is located roughly two miles east of Scio along Richardson Gap Road in rural surroundings. The site is open to visit throughout the year and offers good views of the surrounding countryside.
The bridge has endured significant damage over time, including flood impacts and structural deterioration that required major restoration work. Despite these challenges, it remains in active use as a working crossing.
