Hidden Valley

Hidden Valley is a one-mile loop trail that winds through rock formations and sandy ground, showcasing native desert plants in Joshua Tree National Park. The path moves through natural stone barriers that enclose the valley on all sides.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, this enclosed valley served as a hideout for cattle rustlers who exploited the natural rock barriers for protection. The isolated location made it an ideal refuge from pursuit.

Signage along the path explains how plants and animals survive in the desert, showing visitors the strategies that help local wildlife thrive in this harsh environment. The valley reflects how people have always sought shelter among these rocks.

The trail has rock steps that require careful footing, and visitors should bring at least one liter of water per person for the walk. Cell service does not work here, so planning ahead and letting others know your schedule is wise.

A rock formation called Cow Rock sits on the valley wall and resembles the profile of a cow when viewed from certain angles. This natural sculpture is an overlooked detail many hikers pass without noticing.
