Thomas Mann House, Residential building in Pacific Palisades, United States.
The Thomas Mann House is a residential building in Pacific Palisades designed in the International Style, featuring expansive windows and white exterior walls. Architect J.R. Davidson created the structure with clean lines and functional design typical of this architectural approach.
German novelist Thomas Mann arrived here in 1942 with his family after fleeing the Nazi regime in Europe. During his decade-long stay, he completed his novel Doctor Faustus, one of his most significant works.
The residence bears the name of the German writer who lived and worked here while fleeing Nazi persecution. Today, scholars from Germany and America gather here to discuss and collaborate on questions that matter to both countries.
The property was purchased and extensively renovated by the German government in 2016 for new purposes. Today, fellows can reside there for stays ranging from three to ten months.
The house regularly hosts fellows from various academic fields who work together on contemporary issues. This cross-disciplinary collaboration creates unusual perspectives on German-American relations.
