Colonial Hotel, Hotel in den Vereinigten Staaten
The Colonial Hotel is a four-story building in downtown Seattle built in the early 1900s that showcases Federal architectural style. It stands at the corner of 1st Avenue and Seneca Street, combining residential spaces above with shops and offices at street level.
The hotel was completed in 1901 after a local businessman acquired an unfinished 1890s structure and architect Max Umbrecht designed additions to it. It emerged during Seattle's rapid expansion following the Great Fire of 1889 and initially served travelers and workers during the Yukon Gold Rush era.
The name reflects the architectural style of the early American period that shaped the design. On the ground floor, shops and offices sit alongside residential spaces, showing how work and living were integrated into daily city life.
The building sits in a convenient downtown location near other historic sites and shopping areas. The surrounding neighborhood features busy city life while maintaining walkable streets and easy access for exploration.
An earthquake in 1949 damaged the original roof ornament called a balustrade, which was later removed. A 1905 newspaper described it as a place that arouses wonder, suggesting visitors found it impressive for its time.
