Sheikh Abdul Qader al-Jilani Mosque, Islamic mausoleum and mosque in Sheik Omar, Iraq.
The Sheikh Abdul Qader al-Jilani Mosque is a religious complex with a mosque, mausoleum, and library in the eastern part of Baghdad near the Tigris. The site houses the tomb of a 12th-century Sufi scholar and includes several connected buildings with courtyards and domes.
Abdul Qadir Gilani founded a Sufi school in 12th-century Baghdad that later grew into a widespread spiritual order. Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent built the dome over the tomb in 1535 after earlier structures were destroyed during Persian invasions.
The site draws followers of the Qadiriyya order from around the world who come here to honor the founder of their spiritual tradition. Visitors often kneel on the carpets inside and recite prayers quietly in different languages.
The site is open daily and welcomes visitors during all prayer times, with morning hours often quieter. Modest clothing is required, and women should bring a headscarf when entering the prayer halls.
The library inside the complex preserves manuscripts documenting teachings on Sufi spirituality and Islamic law from multiple centuries. Scholars from different countries come here to study and transcribe these texts.
