Baram Dam, Proposed hydroelectric power station in Sarawak, Malaysia
The Baram Dam is a proposed hydroelectric power station on the Baram River in Sarawak, located about 250 kilometers from Miri. The structure would span 685 meters horizontally and reach a height of 162 meters.
The project originated from a feasibility study in 2010 and received unofficial approval from the Sarawak government in 2014. It emerged from Malaysia's need to expand its energy generation capacity in the region.
The area is inhabited by Kenyah, Kayan, and Penan communities who live in traditional longhouse settlements. The project would directly affect these established communities and their daily life in the river region.
The site is remote and accessible mainly by river, located deep in the rainforest region. Visitors should note that this is an early-stage project site and not currently open for public visitation.
The dam would create a large reservoir and employ four turbines for power generation, making it one of the biggest hydroelectric projects in Southeast Asia. The scale of this undertaking reflects the region's significant water resources and energy demands.
