Sultan Mahmud Airport, airport in Malaysia
Sultan Mahmud Airport is a small airport in Kuala Nerus serving the state of Terengganu, located about 10 kilometers from Kuala Terengganu city center. The terminal features bright indoor spaces, shops, cafes, and traditional wood carvings that structure the building and help visitors navigate through the facility.
The airport was built in 1929, making it one of Malaysia's oldest, giving the region a long aviation history. After a major upgrade in 2007, the runway was extended and the terminal expanded to accommodate larger aircraft like the Airbus A330.
The airport displays traditional wood carvings and local art throughout its design, reflecting Terengganu's regional style and heritage. Visitors get a first sense of Malay culture through these decorations before stepping into the region itself.
The terminal is straightforward to navigate with short wait times at check-in and security during off-peak hours. Taxis and Grab car services wait outside, car rentals are available on-site, and the drive to Kuala Terengganu city center takes only about 15 minutes.
The airport was once suitable only for smaller aircraft, but in 2008 a Boeing 747 landed here for the first time, proving its expanded capacity. Visitors can watch planes take off and land from a viewing gallery, making the terminal itself an unexpected observation point.
