Sabah Art Gallery

Sabah Art Gallery is a museum with an octagonal basket-shaped design that sits on expansive grounds in the Layang district. The space houses paintings, sculptures, and installations created by artists from different parts of the world.

The building was founded in 1984 as a dedicated space for artistic expression in the region. In 2012, it earned an environmental certification that recognized its commitment to sustainable practices.

The name refers to the region and its artistic traditions. Visitors encounter works that reflect both local and international artists, offering insight into how creative expression takes different forms across cultures.

The gallery sits outside the main city area and is easy to reach by car. Plan several hours to see the exhibitions comfortably, as the grounds are large and spread out.

The building runs on solar power and collects rainwater to supply its lighting and air conditioning. It was among the first structures of its kind on the island, showing how art spaces can be built sustainably.
