Museo Arqueológico San Miguel de Azapa, Archaeological museum in San Miguel de Azapa, Chile
The museum covers 1,400 square meters and contains 86,000 artifacts, including textiles, ceramics, and archaeological findings from northern Chile's indigenous populations.
The institution began as the Regional Museum of Arica in 1957 and transformed into its current form in 1967 under the administration of Universidad de Tarapacá.
The collection displays ancient petroglyphs arranged in a circular pattern, representing anthropomorphic and geometric designs from the Middle and Late Intermediate periods.
Located 12 kilometers from Arica, the museum opens Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, with admission costing 2000 Chilean pesos.
The museum houses the Chinchorro mummies in temperature-controlled vaults, preserving these remains that date back over 7,000 years.
