Mosque Bab ul Islam, Islamic prayer center in Tacna, Peru.
Mosque Bab ul Islam is a Muslim place of worship in Tacna, a city in the far south of Peru close to the Chilean border. The building combines Islamic architectural elements with a contemporary style and has a main prayer hall along with an open courtyard.
The mosque was built in the 2000s after a group of Pakistani merchants settled in Tacna during the 1990s and formed a small Muslim community. As their numbers grew, the community needed a dedicated space for prayer, which led to the construction of this building.
The mosque's name means "Gate of Islam" in Arabic, reflecting its role as a point of entry into faith for the local Muslim community. On Fridays, worshippers gather for the main weekly prayer, making that day the most active time to observe the community in use of the space.
Visitors should wear modest clothing that covers arms and legs, and remove shoes before entering the prayer hall. It is best to avoid arriving during the main prayer times if you are not there to pray, so the worshippers are not disturbed.
This is one of the few mosques in all of Peru, and the only one in the Tacna region, which makes it a rare sight in a country where Islamic buildings are almost absent. Its existence shows how a small migrant group can leave a lasting mark on a city far from the country's main urban centers.
