The Municipal Theatre of Tacna is a two-story stone building with classical architectural design located in the city center. Its interior features a main hall with seating arranged to provide good sightlines for performances and cultural events.

The theatre opened in 1862 with opera and drama seasons, its architects modelling it on La Scala in Milan. The 1868 Arica earthquake destroyed it; Constantino Martínez del Pino bought out his co-owners and rebuilt it in 1870–1871 under engineers Miguel Beherthain and Pablo Fernetti. After the 1880 Battle of Tacna it served as a hospital and then a barracks.

The main hall displays portraits of important regional figures like poet Federico Barreto, painter Francisco Laso, and historian Modesto Molina. These paintings remind visitors of the artistic and intellectual traditions that shaped local life and thought.

The architects modelled the auditorium on La Scala in Milan, omitting the Pluvius lodge and one floor, with a couple fewer doors. After the Battle of Alto de la Alianza the building served as a field hospital, then as a barracks, and in July 1882 Chilean artillery brigades occupied it until December 1884. In 2022 the municipality renamed it Teatro Municipal Doctor Luis Cavagnaro Orellana and placed a bust of the historian in the hall.
