Cerro Murphy Observatory, Astronomical observatory in Antofagasta Region, Chile.
Cerro Murphy Observatory is a research facility operating three optical telescopes at 2,817 meters elevation on Cerro Murphy mountain near Cerro Armazones peak. The installation uses solar panels for power and benefits from the clear, dry climate of the Atacama Desert.
The observatory was originally founded as a German-Chilean joint project and transferred to the management of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2020. This transition marked a new chapter in international astronomical cooperation in the region.
Scientists from Chile, Poland, the United States, and European countries conduct research at the observatory to measure the expansion rate of the universe.
The facility sits on a high mountain in the desert, so good physical fitness and preparation for altitude are important for any visitor. The clear, dry weather throughout the year provides excellent conditions for observations.
A new 2.5-meter telescope scheduled for completion in 2026 will be the largest ever constructed outside Poland by that country. This project shows growing Polish ambition in modern astronomical research.
