Vilcashuamán, capital of Vilcas Huamán Province, Peru

Vilcashuamán is an ancient Inca citadel built on a highland plateau at approximately 11,500 feet (3500 meters) in the Andes Mountains. The complex includes temples, trapezoidal plazas, a pyramid structure called the Ushnu, and remains of administrative buildings that reflect its strategic importance.

The site was founded after the Inca victory over the Chancas in 1438 and served as an important administrative and ceremonial center. Following Spanish conquest, a Catholic temple was built on the remains of the ancient Sun Temple, symbolizing the cultural transition between two eras.

The name Vilcashuamán comes from Quechua and means "sacred falcon". Local people still speak Quechua today and keep alive Andean traditions through rituals and ceremonies that continue at the archaeological sites.

The journey from Ayacucho takes about three to four hours by bus through mountainous terrain. It is wise to arrive early, wear sturdy shoes, bring a hat and sun protection, and drink plenty of water since the high altitude can feel tiring at first.

The Ushnu is a short, wide pyramid with five levels topped by a stone believed to have been an Inca throne once covered in gold. From this spot, Inca rulers could oversee and control all the ceremonies and activities happening on the main plaza below.
