La Mar Province

La Mar Province is an administrative area in northeastern Ayacucho Region, characterized by mountains and valleys with varied terrain. Eleven districts make up the province, with San Miguel serving as the main administrative center.

The province was established by the Peruvian government in 1861, with San Miguel chosen as its administrative seat. This founding decision shaped the administrative structure that continues to govern the area today.

Quechua remains the everyday language spoken by most inhabitants, shaping how communities communicate and connect with their surroundings. You will hear it in markets, conversations, and local gatherings throughout the towns and villages.

San Miguel is the best entry point, offering basic services and accommodations for visitors starting their exploration. Getting between districts requires traveling on roads through mountainous terrain, with conditions varying by season.

A prominent peak called Rasuwillka towers over the provincial landscape, dominating the surrounding highlands. Ancient archaeological sites such as K'allapayuq Urqu can be found nearby, preserving evidence of earlier occupation.
