Expo 2020, World's Fair in the United Arab Emirates

Expo 2020 covered 438 hectares between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, near the Jebel Ali port and Al Maktoum airport. The HOK master plan placed Al Wasl Plaza at the centre, ringed by three thematic districts: Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability. Orascom and BESIX built the infrastructure, and the ROVE Expo 2020 hotel had 312 rooms and 19 suites.

The event was originally scheduled for 2020 but was postponed one year to 2021 when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted plans. This was Dubai's first time hosting a World's Fair since its bid was accepted in 2013.

The fairgrounds brought together people from across the globe who shared their traditions and innovations. Visitors could encounter representatives from many nations presenting their countries through pavilions and performances.

The grounds were accessible by public transport and walkways, with clear signage at main gates. It was wise to wear comfortable shoes and explore early in the day, as the site was quite large.

Al Wasl Plaza, named after the Arabic word for connection, was enclosed by the three thematic districts of Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability. Its dome measured 130 metres in diameter and served as the projection surface for the opening ceremony on 30 September 2021, when Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum declared the Expo open.
