Kunar Province, Mountain province in eastern Afghanistan
Kunar is a province in eastern Afghanistan that covers mountainous terrain cut by deep valleys. The river winds between spurs of the Hindu Kush range, linking several small settlements that cling to the mountain slopes.
The region served for centuries as a passage for armies moving between Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Later it became part of the Durrani realm that emerged in the 18th century.
The name comes from the river that runs through valleys and supplies water to farming communities across the region. In mountain villages today you see timber houses with flat roofs clinging to steep hillsides.
The main road connects the provincial capital Asadabad to Jalalabad and runs through several districts along the river valley. Travel through the terrain can take several hours as the road includes steep climbs and tight bends.
Many mountain villages have their own mosques with timber minarets that look quite different from the usual stone structures. This local building style adapts to available materials and the steep terrain.
