Chitral Gol National Park, National park in Lower Chitral District, Pakistan.
Chitral Gol National Park is a protected area in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province featuring alpine meadows, mountain valleys, and dense cedar forests along the Chitral River. Elevation changes dramatically throughout the park, creating different landscape zones from river level to high mountain terrain.
The area belonged to the Mehtar of Chitral until 1983, when it became state-managed protected territory. This transfer of control sparked disagreements between the ruler's descendants and the government over ownership and rights.
The former Summer Fort of local rulers stands in this area and offers insights into how the territory was traditionally governed from above. The structure reflects the historical power dynamic between the rulers and the valley they controlled.
Access is challenging, especially during rain and winter when mountain roads become narrow and hazardous due to snow and landslides. Visitors should prepare for changing weather conditions and steep mountain terrain.
The reserve is home to rare mountain dwellers including Kashmir Markhor and snow leopards that roam the high reaches. These animals thrive in the cedar forests and steep valleys where few humans venture.
