Himara, Administrative region on the Albanian Riviera, Albania
Himara is a municipality on the Albanian Riviera, positioned between the Ceraunian Mountains and the Ionian Sea. It covers several coastal and inland villages, all linked by a road that follows the shoreline.
The area was inhabited in ancient times by Greek-speaking tribes who called the place Chimaira. During the Middle Ages, fortifications and churches were built, and some of those structures are still standing.
In daily life, both Greek and Albanian are spoken here, and this mix is visible on signs, in shops, and during church services. Orthodox churches appear in nearly every village and are still in active use today.
The municipality is reached by a coastal road that connects the villages and beaches along the way. Visiting in summer gives the easiest travel conditions, though some inland roads can be narrow and slow.
Inside the fortified complex of the main village, several church walls were built directly on top of ancient temple foundations. Visitors who look closely can spot stone blocks from different periods mixed into the same walls.
