Yeghishe Charents House-Museum, Biographical museum in Kentron District, Yerevan, Armenia.
The Yeghishe Charents House-Museum is a biographical museum housed in a pink tuff stone building on Mashtots Avenue in the Kentron District of Yerevan. The building contains the rooms where the poet lived and worked, along with exhibition halls displaying manuscripts, photographs, and personal belongings.
The museum was founded in 1964 by decree of the Council of Ministers of Soviet Armenia and opened to the public in 1975. It was established at a time when Soviet authorities began rehabilitating the legacy of writers who had been persecuted during the Stalinist repressions.
The museum takes its name from Eghishe Charents, one of the most celebrated Armenian poets of the 20th century, whose verses are still memorized in Armenian schools today. Visitors can walk through the actual rooms where he lived, giving the visit a personal and direct feel.
The museum sits on Mashtots Avenue in central Yerevan, within walking distance of many other sites in the area. It is open Tuesday through Sunday, so it fits easily into a broader day of exploring the city center.
The poet's private library, kept in the museum, holds over 1,400 volumes, many with handwritten notes in the margins. These annotations show how he engaged with the books he read and make the collection one of the most personal parts of the visit.
