Calcatreu, Precious metals deposit in Rio Negro Province, Argentina.
Calcatreu is a mineral deposit in Rio Negro containing gold and silver in volcanic rock formations beneath the surface. The site consists of multiple ore veins spread across the landscape in a region far from major cities.
Exploration of this deposit started in the 1990s when mining companies began studying the area. Various extraction projects were then proposed and discussed over the following years.
The mining project faced opposition from local indigenous communities, including the Development Council of Indigenous Communities of Rio Negro.
The site is located in a remote Andean region and is difficult to reach. Visitors should prepare for harsh conditions and long travel times from nearby towns.
The deposit features eleven vein systems, including a notable formation stretching 2 kilometers in length and reaching 20 meters in width.
