Cerro López, Mountain summit in Río Negro Province, Argentina
Cerro López is a mountain in Rio Negro Province that rises to 2,188 meters above sea level. From its summit, you can see Lake Nahuel Huapi and the surrounding Patagonian peaks spread across the landscape.
The mountain was home and a route for indigenous communities who traveled through the Patagonian peaks for generations. Modern hiking trails still follow the ancient paths that these groups established long ago.
Local mountaineering traditions at Cerro López include stopping at Refugio López, where climbers share stories and regional foods during their ascent.
The hike starts at Arroyo López trailhead and goes first to Refugio López, which takes about 3 hours. From the refuge, the final push to the summit takes another hour.
The mountain has two distinct climbing routes: the main path via the refuge and the more challenging Palotinos Trail that runs along the ridge. Each route offers different views and demands different skill levels from climbers.
