Puntiagudo-Cordón Cenizos, Stratovolcano in Llanquihue Province, Chile.
Puntiagudo-Cordón Cenizos is an andesite stratovolcano located between Rupanco Lake and Todos los Santos Lake in Llanquihue Province. Its distinctive sharp peak rises to 2,493 meters and was sculpted by glacial erosion over time.
The first recorded ascent took place in 1937 when Swiss mountaineer Hermann Hess and Chilean Rodolfo Roth reached the summit via Lake Todos los Santos. A major earthquake in 1960 subsequently altered the volcano's summit profile.
Local mountaineers consider this volcano among the most demanding peaks to climb in southern Chile, requiring extensive preparation and technical expertise.
Two main routes lead to the summit: through Puntiagudo Valley or via the southeast shore of Rupanco Lake. Winter conditions generally provide better climbing surfaces, but mountaineering experience is necessary year-round.
The 1960 earthquake, one of the strongest ever recorded, reshaped this volcano's summit and altered its appearance from an even sharper peak. This seismic event left permanent marks on the mountain's profile.
