Laja, Administrative commune in Bío Bío province, Chile
Laja is a commune in Bío Bío province that extends between the Laja River to the north and the Biobío River to the west. The territory includes both urban zones and rural settlements such as Las Ciénagas and Villa Laja.
The commune was founded in 1891 as Estación de la Rinconada and received its current name in 1927 during an administrative restructuring. This name change marked an important shift in how the area was organized and governed.
The yearly Festival Vive Laja brings locals and visitors together to celebrate music and regional traditions in the main plaza. The event shows how the community takes pride in its customs and social bonds.
The locality functions as a local administrative hub serving the resident population with essential services. Rural areas are connected to the center by local roads, making it easy to explore the different neighborhoods and settlements.
The meeting point of the Laja and Biobío rivers creates a natural boundary that shapes the territory. This geographic feature has influenced how the community developed and where people chose to settle over time.
