Viña del Mar, Coastal resort city in Valparaíso Region, Chile
This city in the Valparaíso Region of Chile stretches along approximately eight miles of Pacific coastline. The resort connects residential neighborhoods with wide avenues, several beaches, and green hills sloping down toward the ocean.
The site emerged in the 19th century from a wine estate and grew into a popular seaside resort after a railway line to Santiago was built. Numerous European immigrants settled from the 1880s onward and shaped the architecture throughout the town.
Several parks and public gardens featuring Mediterranean plants shape the appearance of the coastal resort, while promenades and beach sections are used by families and athletes on weekends. Along the coast, numerous restaurants with ocean views serve Chilean seafood dishes.
Travelers reach the resort via Highway 68 from Santiago or along the coastal road from Valparaíso within a few minutes. Most beaches are freely accessible, while some clifftop sections are only reachable by stairs.
In the Quinta Vergara neighborhood stands a palace built in 1910 in Venetian style, now serving as a museum and surrounded by a botanical garden. The adjacent amphitheater area was laid out in the 1960s and has since been used for large concert events.
