Ascensor Villanelo, Funicular railway in Viña del Mar, Chile
Ascensor Villanelo is a funicular railway in Viña del Mar that climbs a steep slope connecting the lower city to residential areas above. A single small cabin moves along an inclined track, carrying passengers up and down the hillside with a capacity of about 20 people per trip.
The funicular opened in 1983 to connect growing residential areas with the lower city. A fire in 1984 temporarily shut it down, but the system was restored because the connection it provided had become essential to the city's daily life.
This transportation link shaped how the city grew upward, creating distinct neighborhoods at different elevations. Residents and visitors alike use it to move between the bustling lower areas and the quieter residential zones above.
The ride is straightforward and requires no special preparation, making it accessible to most visitors. Keep in mind that the small cabin gets crowded during peak hours, so arriving early in the day offers a more comfortable experience.
This is the only public cable system of its kind in Viña del Mar, while the nearby city of Valparaíso operates an entire network of similar funiculars. This rarity makes a visit here feel like stepping into a piece of local history that has survived while others disappeared.
