Wulff Castle, Castle on coastal promontory in Viña del Mar, Chile
Castillo Wulff is a castle on a rocky coastal promontory in Viña del Mar and features a stone structure with a circular tower connected to the main building by a glass-floor bridge. The bridge spans over the ocean and offers views of waves crashing against the rocky shore below.
A German merchant named Gustav Wulff built a wooden house at this coastal location in 1906 and later had it transformed into a stone structure with architect Alberto Cruz Montt's help. The building received National Historical Monument status in Chile in 1995.
The castle served as the Chilean Naval Museum from 1960 to 1988 and displayed ships, maps, and maritime objects from the nation's seafaring past. Visitors could explore Chile's naval history through exhibitions of these significant collections during that period.
The building now houses the city's Heritage Department and sits at Marina Avenue 37. The site is easy to reach from the coastal road and provides parking and pathways around the rocky promontory.
The transparent floor of the glass bridge lets visitors look directly down at waves and rocks as they walk between the tower and main house. This sensation of being suspended over the sea makes crossing the bridge a memorable moment during the visit.
