Quinta Normal Park, Urban park in Santiago, Chile
Quinta Normal Park is an urban park in the Quinta Normal district of Santiago, Chile, covering about 36 hectares (88 acres) with green spaces, ponds, and walking paths. The grounds include several lakes with paddle boats, open lawns, and shaded areas under tall trees where visitors can rest.
The park was established in 1841 as testing grounds for cultivating foreign plant species for agriculture. Greenhouses and breeding stations shaped the first decades before the grounds were converted into a public park in the mid-20th century.
The name comes from an old land division for agricultural testing grounds from the mid-1800s. Today families use the grounds for weekend outings and many spend the whole day there with picnics under old trees.
Access is through several entrances on Matucana Avenue, Portales Avenue, and Santo Domingo Street, with the Quinta Normal metro station nearby. Visiting on weekends means more people and more activities, while weekdays are quieter and better for walks.
The park has fixed grill stations where visitors can cook their food without bringing their own equipment. A shallow water area allows children to play in the water while others paddle nearby in boats.
