Central clasificadora de Correos de Chile, Postal sorting facility in Estación Central, Chile
Central clasificadora de Correos de Chile is a six-story concrete building with a rectangular footprint and an exposed skeleton structure. Ten interior pillars support the open floor plans, creating flexible spaces for mail sorting operations.
Designed by architect Boris Guiñerman, the building was constructed between 1971 and 1974 following a land transfer from the State Railway Company. After more than four decades of postal operations, the facility was decommissioned when mail processing moved elsewhere.
The building displays 1970s design language with exposed concrete and large window openings that reveal the inner workings of the postal operations. This transparency was intentional and signaled that this was important public infrastructure.
The building sits on Exposición Street and is easy to reach by public transit in the Estación Central area. Since it is a former operational facility, access is currently limited, so check current opening times and access conditions before visiting.
In 2022, the State Railway Company launched an architectural competition to redesign the former postal center as their new corporate headquarters. This gave the long-dormant building an unexpected second purpose after its postal operations had moved away.
