Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende, History museum in Santiago, Chile.
The Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende is an art museum in Santiago housing more than 2,700 works including paintings, prints, sculptures, drawings, and photographs from artists around the world. The museum occupies the Palacio Heiremans, a stately 1925 building that retains its original character.
The museum was founded in 1971 to gather artworks that international artists donated in support of Chile. It operated in exile from 1975 to 1990 under a different name, Museo Internacional de la Resistencia Salvador Allende, during the military dictatorship.
The museum is named after former President Salvador Allende and demonstrates how international artists showed solidarity with Chile through their work. Exhibitions here explore themes of social justice and how art served as a form of political expression.
The museum is walkable from downtown Santiago and located in the city's cultural district. It has regular opening hours and offers tours and workshops for visitors of all ages.
Major artists including Joan Miró, Roberto Matta, and Frank Stella donated works as a gesture of solidarity with Chile. These contributions make the museum a record of how the international art world took a stand during a difficult period in Chilean history.
