Glaciar de los Argentinos, Glacier formation in Mount Pissis, Catamarca and La Rioja, Argentina.
Glaciar de los Argentinos is an ice formation on the northeastern slope of Mount Pissis in the Atacama Andes at approximately 4,600 meters elevation. The mass extends across several kilometers and displays characteristic glacier features including crevasse fields and seracs in its lower sections.
The area was explored through multiple expeditions in the late 20th century, which led to its current naming. The distinction between this and other ice masses on the mountain emerged from the work of these early researchers.
The glacier shapes the landscape character of the surrounding Andes region and draws mountaineers attempting higher peaks in the area. The ice field plays an important role in the water storage system of the region and contributes to water supply for communities downstream.
Access is gained through established mountaineering routes that depart from the Mar del Plata base camp. Visitors should prepare for extreme elevation and harsh alpine conditions, as the route passes through high mountain terrain.
A striking feature is the notable narrowing of the ice mass at approximately 5,100 meters elevation, where the width decreases significantly. This natural constriction is often used by mountaineers as a distinctive orientation point during ascent.
