Catamayo Canton

Catamayo Canton is an administrative region in Loja Province made up of several parishes including San José, El Tambo, Guayquichuma, and Zambi. The territory features a mix of rural communities spread across a valley landscape with agricultural activity.

Catamayo Canton was established as part of Ecuador's territorial reorganization to improve regional administration in southern Loja Province. The area has long served as an agricultural zone with connections to regional trade networks.

The population of 35,240 residents includes a mix of 88 percent Mestizo, 7.5 percent Afro-Ecuadorian, and smaller percentages of other ethnic groups.

The region is accessible by road connections linking to neighboring areas and the provincial capital. The airport in La Toma provides travelers with connections to larger regional centers.

The Monterrey Sugar Cane Processing Plant operates in the canton's valley and serves as a major production facility for sugar in southern Ecuador. This facility makes the region an important manufacturing center within the local economy.
