Loja Canton

This canton spreads across mountainous terrain in southern Ecuador and comprises thirteen parishes including Vilcabamba and Malacatos. The area spans different elevations and contains various ecological zones throughout its landscape.

The canton's founding began in 1548 when Captain Alonso de Mercadillo established the capital. The city later moved to a new location after earthquakes damaged the original settlement.

The capital of this canton maintains strong musical traditions through multiple academies and schools. Music is woven into daily life and public spaces throughout the area.

The area has mild temperatures year-round, ranging from 22 to 27 degrees Celsius. The varied elevations mean visitors may encounter different conditions depending on which part they explore.

The parish of Vilcabamba within this area attracts researchers because of the notably long lifespans of its residents. Natural hot springs in the region are another reason why scientists and visitors come here.
