Santo Domingo Canton is an administrative district spanning roughly 3,500 square kilometers, containing multiple urban parishes and rural communities. The area sits around 1,000 meters in elevation and features diverse geography shaped by river systems.
The canton was officially established in 1967 and initially belonged to Pichincha Province. In 2013, the area transferred to the newly created Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas Province.
