Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve, Protected forest reserve in Tandayapa Valley, Ecuador
Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve is a protected forest area in Tandayapa Valley covering roughly 700 hectares across elevations ranging from 1650 to 2350 meters. The terrain features dense forest paths, steep mountainsides, waterfalls, and clear flowing streams throughout.
The reserve was founded in 1991 by Richard and Gloria Parsons who began with a small initial parcel of land. Over time, continuous land acquisitions expanded the protected area to its present size.
The place functions as a research and teaching hub where visitors can observe how scientists and local guides work to understand and protect the cloud forest ecosystem. The daily activities here focus on learning and conservation through direct interaction with the forest environment.
The reserve is located about 52 kilometers from Quito and offers multilingual guided tours along with accommodation in a geodesic dome structure. A network of roughly 10 kilometers of walking trails provides various ways to explore the forest.
The forest is home to over 320 bird species, including uncommon ones like the Tanager-finch and Giant Antpitta that attract serious birders. This remarkable bird diversity makes the location a significant destination for those interested in avian life.
