Loreto Department, Administrative region in northeastern Peru
The Loreto Department spans across 368,852 square kilometers of land, making it the largest administrative region in Peru, containing substantial sections of Amazon rainforest.
The region experienced significant transformation during the rubber boom of the late 19th century, which brought international trade and economic development to the previously isolated area.
Indigenous communities of Loreto maintain their traditions through festivals, including the Festival of the Amazonian Jungle, where they present dances, music, and traditional foods.
Transportation within Loreto relies primarily on river networks and air travel, as most settlements remain inaccessible by road, including the capital city of Iquitos.
The department contains eight provinces and numerous protected areas that shelter rare species of plants and animals found nowhere else in Peru.
