BR-158, highway in Brazil
BR-158 is a federal highway that runs nearly 4,000 kilometers from Redenção in Pará to Santana do Livramento at the Uruguay border. The road crosses eight states and connects agricultural, mining, and pastoral regions in Brazil's interior without passing through any state capital.
The road was developed in the 1950s and 1960s when the government created a network of connecting routes to open up the interior. The project aimed to link the north and south of Brazil and ease the transport of goods and people.
Many sections of the road are partially unpaved or in poor condition, especially in Pará and northern Mato Grosso, and become difficult to drive during rain. Plan longer driving routes with stops for fuel and rest, as gas stations are sparse in some regions.
The road carries the nickname 'Soy Corridor' because of its importance in exporting this product and is sometimes called the 'Death Road' due to unpaved and dangerous sections with accident risks. These names reflect both its economic role and real safety challenges.
