Oroncota

Oroncota is an archaeological site in narrow valleys featuring ancient structures spread across a large area along two river systems. The ruins show evidence of multiple cultures that occupied and built here over many centuries.

The region was first home to the Yampara people who built their own civilization here. Later the Inca Empire took control and transformed the settlement into a defensive stronghold.

The pottery found here shows different styles that reflect how the ancient people organized themselves into groups. Visitors can see these variations in the excavated remains and understand how community life was structured.

The site sits in hilly terrain that requires good physical fitness to explore thoroughly. Visitors should prepare for changing weather conditions and bring appropriate gear for outdoor exploration.

A plateau on the western side shows signs of ancient farming at high elevation that is now abandoned. These old fields reveal how people once used the hillsides despite the challenging conditions.
