Santiago de Callapa Municipality, municipality of Bolivia
Santiago de Callapa Municipality is a municipality in Pacajes Province covering mountainous terrain at elevations between 3,800 and 4,377 meters (12,467 and 14,360 feet). The landscape features steep valleys, grassland, and scattered settlements distributed across the high plateaus.
The municipality was established as the eighth administrative division of Pacajes Province, merging indigenous settlements with Spanish colonial administrative structures. This combination shaped local governance and community organization through the centuries.
The local population sustains agricultural practices focused on highland crops and livestock farming, with community gatherings marking seasonal transitions throughout the year. These traditions shape daily life and the rhythm of work in the region.
Visitors should prepare for high altitude since medical facilities are limited and transport services operate on restricted schedules through mountain roads. The best time to visit is during the dry season when roads are more passable.
The area contains Ch'alla Jawira Lake and several mineral deposits that hold economic significance for the region. Local residents produce traditional textiles using techniques handed down through many generations of craftspeople.
