Reserva Itabó, Protected biological reserve in Alto Paraná Department, Paraguay.
Reserva Itabó is a protected reserve in Alto Paraná covering about 15,000 hectares, with two arms of the Itabó River flowing west to east through rolling terrain. The landscape contains diverse habitats that support the region's wildlife.
The reserve was established in 1984 and became part of a conservation system managed by Itaipu Binacional near the Paraná River. This arrangement connected the protected area to broader regional environmental management efforts.
The Guarani indigenous community of Itabó maintains a primary school near the reserve, connecting environmental protection with social development.
Access to the reserve comes through Routes 1 and 2 from Hernandarias, located about 80 kilometers north of the city. Visitors can use marked trails to explore the different habitats within the reserve.
The reserve is home to all five toucan species found in Paraguay, along with large populations of pumas and tapirs. This concentration makes it a notable location for observing these animals together.
