Tatí Yupí Refuge

Tatí Yupí Refuge is a protected forest reserve on the river bank featuring subtropical habitats with varied vegetation types. The area contains several waterfalls and displays different elevation zones throughout its natural layout.

This refuge was established in 1982 when the Itaipu hydroelectric dam development began and several forest areas were protected. It is part of a network of eight ecological reserves managed by the power project.

The name comes from the Guarani language and refers to fireflies that light up the forest in the evenings. This connection to indigenous language shows how the place reflects the region's roots.

The site is accessible via three marked hiking trails that open up different forest sections and offer varying focuses for exploration. The best visit depends on weather conditions and which forest area you wish to see.

The forest shelters old trees of great height in its upper canopy, including local wood species like cedar and lapacho. Seeing these forest giants is a rare experience since such large specimens are uncommon in most other regions.
